It is often associated with the rich and wealthy, even though it is not as large as mansions.

Maisonettes are similar to apartments,
but instead of being on a single unit in one floor for each flats,
a flat can span multiple floors. Essentially,
a maisonette is like having a duplex within an apartment building.
